A brief overview of the manufacturing process of PCD

Man-made diamonds are produced from the purest form of graphite. Under conditions of high pressure and temperature, in the presence of certain catalysts, graphite gets converted in micron-sized diamond crystals. The crystals are then finely graded and sintered together with tungsten carbide to produce different grades of PCD blanks

Applications of PCD Cutting Tools

PCD tools are most frequently applied in the automobile industry comprising both heavy and light motor vehicles. Some of the materials that have been cost effectively machined with solar PCD tools include are aluminum alloys, copper, bronze, abrasive plastic composites etc.

CBN (Cubic Boron Nitride) Tools

Cubic Boron Nitride is the hardest and most abrasion resistant material known to man, next only to diamond

The manufacturing process and physical properties of CBN are very similar to those of PCD, except that instead of graphite, boron nitride is the building block for CBN. Like graphite, boron nitride is subjected to high temperature and pressure in the presence of catalysts to form cubic crystals of various micron sizes. These crystals are then graded and sintered together with tungsten carbide as the substrate, to form integral CBN blanks

Like in PCD the crystals within a CBN blank are also randomly oriented resulting in uniform hardness and abrasion resistance in all directions. The toughness of cemented tungsten carbide combined with the hardness of CBN layer enables CBN Cutting tools to with satnd the high cutting forces encountered while taking heavy cuts in tough, hard to machine material. It also results in high impact resistance needed to withstand the shocks of severe interrupted cuts.

Description:

Single point "bruted diamond" dressers are made with selected "Congo Rounds" mounted in a matrix.
A Single cutting edge is presented to the grinding wheel.

Diamonds for single point dressers are selected in accordance with quality and size. The question of using a superior, average or commercial quality, depends on the grinding finish required and the machines and working parameters.

We offer three grades namely A, B & C for all the diamond size, Availability: 0.25 Ct to 5.00 Ct

Natural Point Diamonds : The Diamond points are naturally formed. (Not man made like grades
A, B, & C) This is a gift of nature. Natural Point Diamond Dressers have high form retention properties. Availability: 0.10 Ct to 2.50 Ct

Guideline for Single - Point Diamond Dressers :

Considerable care should be taken in mounting the diamond dresser in position. Diamonds are sensitive to shock and impact.

The dresser must be clamped rigidly in place to avoid vibration once dressing begins.

An ample supply of coolant should be directed at the diamond point before dressing begins, as the sudden application of coolant to the diamond once it has heated up can cause it to shatter.

The diamond holder should not be set directly on the center of the grinding wheel, but at an angle of
5-15 to the direction of rotation of the wheel so that it appears to be "trailing"

At normal wheel peripheral speeds, dressing rates of approximately 20-25 m/sec can be achieved.

The maximum depth of cut achieved per dressing pass is 0.03 mm or on fine grit wheels,
approximately 0.005-0.01 mm. ( Single Point Diamond Dressers )

The cross feed rate is dependent upon grit size and can have a marked influence on the quality of the finish imparted to the grinding wheel surface. The lower the feed rate, the finer the surface finish.

LAP
Poorly graded diamond powder is wasteful and unreliable. Uneven cutting results from the fact that only large particles contact work, while small particles do not work. Scratched,pitted surface is the result.

SOLAR
Diamond Lapping Compounds, particularly suited for the rapid polishing of all hard materials, are used extensively in the manufacture of precision components, tungsten carbide dies, precision gauges, optical flats and lenses etc. (Also in creating a high degree of finish for hard metal moulds, gem polishing and sapphire processing.) Only uniform well-graded diamond powders are used throughout the range of SOLAR Lapping compounds and Slurry. These powders are accurately and consistently graded by a special process to ensure individual particles of sound crystalline structure, blocky in shape with sharp, well-defined edges. The diamond particles are measured microscopically, the size being defined as the diameter of a circle having the same area as the diamond particles when viewed through a microscope.

BASE MATERIAL
Water Soluble :The water soluble version is entirely soluble in water or diethylene glycan. A very satisfactory thinner is a 50 per cent mixture of both. Great care should be taken to add just sufficient thinner to spread the compound. If the compound is thinned excessively it is liable to "Fly-off" the job when it is rotating at high speed.

Oil Soluble : The oil soluble version is a special formula which has low Molecular Weight & is Heat Resistant. Use SOLAR "OS"fluid to give considerable covering properties & other benefits.

COLOUR CODE
The diamond grain size of any particular paste can be instantly determined by its colour. This is further facilitated by the paste being supplied in translucent syringes. A list of these colours as they relate to the varying grades is given in the brochure.

LAPPING SEQUENCE
If use of conventionalabrasive powder is terminated in range of 250/300 Mesh, then lapping with diamond paste should commence with SOLAR D 50 grade compound,followed by D 20 and then D 10: should, however, an extra high finish be desired, then D 3 should be used as a final polishing step.

If use of conventional abrasive powder is terminated in the finer Mesh range of 400 to 600, then lapping should start with SOLAR D 30 grade, followed by D 10 and D 3. In super finishes use of D 1as the last recommended step.

IMPORTANCE OF THE CORRECT SELECTION OF LAPS
NOTE : The harder the lap, the faster the rate of stock removal, and coarser the finish and conversely the softer the lap,the slower the cutting, but higher the finish.

GENERAL USAGE HINTS
It is important to note that in many cases it is necessary to use two or three grades of SOLAR Lapping Compounds where the starting surface and that which is finally desired is a appreciably
different.

Use the paste as sparingly as possible. Initially apply just sufficient thinner to spread the paste over the working surface and then subsequently as much as is required to maintain lubrication.

CORRECT CHOICE OF COMPOUND CONCENTRATION
A. Use standard concentration of SOLAR DIAMOND compounds for hardened steel, mild steel and chrome Plate.
B. Use high concentration for tungsten carbide and other hard materials.

A RULE OF THUMB FOR COMPOUND SELECTION
Use high Concentration of compound on materials over Rockwell C 50, and standard Concentration under Rockwell C 50.
